A Shau Valley with 101st Airborne
Division. Fire base Berchtesgaden, Aug. 1968.
From Walter J. Smith:
My mug is at the bottom right. Clockwise, from bottom right: Walter J. Smith, Airman First Class;
John Eddington, Staff Sergeant; Gary Brock, Sergeant; John W. Hall, Staff Sergeant and Team NCOIC. I
also believe the butt in the top left is Michael Welding, Staff Sergeant. The Team OIC, Capt.
Hatfield, is not visible in the photo. The photo was taken about July 1968, at Camp Evans, Vietnam,
home of the First Calvary, Airmobile. We were about to take a slick out for a two week "Search
and Destroy" mission, attached to the grunts, humping up from the floor of the A Shau Valley to
the Laotian border, along the border (and some said many times over that we routinely crossed that
border when necessary or convenient, but I was just a lowly A1C and cannot confirm any of that, nor
can I deny it). CCT mission was to deliver tactical air cover, bombs, napalm, whatever, when the
situation warranted.
