L-R: Rick (Jr. Flip) Myers, Jack "Spider" Webb, and Al Joye.
First, the early days at Dyess. I got there the first of Jan. '62. CWO Rountree was there at that time. We were assigned to the 64th TCW. A and D model C-130s. Joe and I were the only ones there for about six months. Rick Myers and Al Joye came in next. I think Mo Lattimore was right after them.
I don't recall the order of the others, however I will give you the names I can recall: Gordon Hamblin, Tony Evenson, Marty North, Marty Martinez, and a guy named King.
If I think of any others I'll let you know.
Some of the operations we covered in the early days there ('62 & '63) were DZ coverage at Ft. Benning, the missile
crisis in Cuba, the activation of the 528th Airborne Brigade at Fort Kobe, Panama (we worked the DZ/LZ operations at Rio
Hato), the testing of the Fulton Recovery System at Ft. Hood, TX. and at Yuma, AZ.
We also worked Big Delta Alaska during that time. There was no drop zone at Dyess then so we went TDY to jump. We did make one or two jumps in a small cleared area next to the base garbage pits. I think there was a message in the selection of that area.
